Graeme Mitchell, “Detached Pictures” installation view, 2017

Best known as an editorial photographer whose portraits have appeared in magazines and newspapers such as The New Yorker, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, Graeme Mitchell is also an accomplished and sensitive painter. “Detached Pictures” presents a compelling series of connected while simultaneously independent works that were inspired by photographs. Mitchell is interested in how a painting can replace a photographic image, and how interpretation and perception changes through this transformation. His paintings are, as a result, mysterious and ambiguous. They allude to rather than fully represent the source images. He speaks of the works as representing the space between things and depicts these subjects with a subdued, nearly monochromatic palette.
