Evan Trine
Roberts & Tilton, Culver City, California
Recommendation by Jody Zellen

Evan Trine, “Portrait (Evie and Nolan Sitting on the Roots of a Giant Bay Fig),” 2017, unique archival pigment print, 42 x 42 x 2”

Continuing through July 15, 2017

In Evan Trine's previous exhibition he presented two bodies of work: “Headines" and "Color Grids." The “Headlines" were black and white abstraction in which Trine layered the letters from a headline that was trending on Facebook. The "Color Grids" began as photographs that were reduced to geometric forms (pixels) that represented the colors in the photographs.

In his latest body of work, entitled “Portraits," he continues this method of reduction. Portraits of friends and family are transformed into single colored squares. Trine's project is pure concept, as he is using a conversation about the photograph and photographic reproducibility as a point of departure making works that signify something universal that is not depicted, and therefore left to the individual viewer's imagination.
