Carroll Dunham
Blum and Poe, Culver City, California
Recommendation by Jody Zellen

Carroll Dunham, "A Wrestling Place (1)," 2017, mixed media on linen, 51 x 66 x 1 1/4"

Continuing through June 17, 2017

Carroll Dunham is renowned for paintings and drawings created in a cartoony style reminiscent of Philip Guston. Dunham's latest body of work continues his exploration of the naked male — here depicted frolicking and wrestling. The works are both off-putting and humorous as Dunham draws and paints his longhaired bearded subjects in different phases of attack or repose, often surrounded by domestic animals in simplified landscapes. Included are paintings from the “Wrestler,” "Self Examination,” "A Wrestling Place” series, and drawings from "The Golden Age." The works are at once tongue and cheek as well as poignant commentaries on male-to-male relationships.

Also on view are Chicago based artist Tony Lewis' large-scale graphite, and color pencil drawings of interlocking and overlapping curvilinear shapes. These abstract works translate sounds into gestures.
