Andrea Zittel, "Planar Configurations," installation view, 2017

Continuing through August 12, 2017

Andrea Zittel's work has long hovered between art and furniture. In her current installation, the gallery is populated by low modernist forms that simultaneously function as beds and couches. Zittel calls these works "Planar Configurations." They have the appearance of well-designed private environments/enclosures that feel out of place in the gallery. These powder-coated steel and aluminum sculptures are presented in conjunction with a series of works on paper.

While studies for the sculpture, they clearly map out Zittel's aesthetic considerations. As watercolor and gouache on paper artworks they explore geometric patterns contrasted with less saturated and washy backgrounds. The works on paper are diagrams mapping the relationship between the furniture and the environment, but as stand alone pieces they have a satisfying formal grace.
