The Harwood Collection: Work by Women

The 80 artists in Work by Women are pioneers. They are stewards of the "a complex narrative shaped over centuries by the confluence of Native American, Hispano and Anglo cultures against the towering landscape of Taos."

As curators of this exhibition we have selected rarely shown works by women from the Museum collection. We believe it is past time to celebrate these women artists who share a maverick desire to express their personal visions in Taos. It is time to look at the work of these artists through the lens of the "silence breakers" era. It is time to recognize that women in Taos have been speaking their truths for decades–in paint, on film, in fiber, glass and stone.

While Taos offers the freedom for women artists to mind their own spaces, their journey has too often been clouded by cultural, economic and social encumbrances. We hope this exhibition will spark dialogue and renewed appreciation for working women artists. Our goal is to reveal a visual narrative of aesthetic continuity, from Catharine Critcher, the only female to be invited into Taos Society of Artists, to the social commentary of Erin Currier and Jolene Nenibah Yazzie.
