The Legacy of Helene Wurlitzer: From the Harwood Collection
Harwood Museum of Art
The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation is the oldest artist residency program west of the Mississippi. The program has brought hundreds of visual artists, writers and composers to Taos. Many have stayed. This show presents Wurlitzer alumni from the museum collection and illustrates one woman's influence on 70 years of Taos art and artists. Mining heiress Helene Wurlitzer (1874-1963) arrived in Taos in 1940 at the invitation of young vocal student, Eduardo Rael. She quietly supported many local artists through collecting their art, providing materials and offering living space. In 1954, she established an artist residency program that, due to her generous endowment, continues today. The exhibit includes the first artist in residence, Agnes Martin, as well as Earl Stroh, Andrew Dasburg, Patrocino Barela, Michio Takiyama, Robert Ray and many, many others. Ends May 5, 2019.

Through the delicate use of lace, oil paints and powerful imagery, she addresses Americas love story with guns & the vulnerability and heartbreaking fragility of parenting during our age of mass shootings.
