From the exaggerated light-play of the Italian Baroque to the coolly cerebral compositions and constructions of the Light and Space movement, the variations of light and color have endured as an elemental aesthetic concern. The galley's own Jane Beebe has curated a thoughtful four-person show, "LIGHT," which surveys the ways in which contemporary artists utilize and deconstruct the notion of light across diverse media.
Johannes Girardoni addresses the phenomenon directly in his geometric sculpture, "Peak Light Extractor — Gray/Yellow," which counterposes a painted yellow rectangle against two perpendicular LED lights. He complements the piece with "Colorvoid (Trough) — Titanium White,"o a skinny vertical form coated in dense encaustic medium. Molly Vidor’s "The White Painting" is a kind of updating of Robert Ryman, while Nancy Lorenz uses mother-of-pearl and gold leaf to evoke sunrays piercing clouds. Finally, Heechan Kim offers the hanging wooden sculpture, "#9," whose copper staples catch the gallery’s halogens with a subtle gleam. This is a conceptually engaging, visually rewarding show, highlighting the similarities and differences in artists’ approaches to an overarching concern.
