Hannah Whitaker, “Dangle I,” 2017, archival pigment print, 50 1/2 x 40”

Hannah Whitaker's photographic works appear to be digitally manipulated, but actually are 100% analog and made within the camera. Whitaker shoots her images on a single piece of 4 x 5 film using techniques of in-camera masking. This allows for a layering exposures that Whitaker uses to enigmatic and colorful ends. Titled "Live Agent" (a consumer term that references a comprehensive chat solution), Whitaker's works feature silhouetted hands, feet, faces and other body parts shot against an array of solid shapes and gradients. The pieces are geometric abstractions dotted with figurative elements whose making confounds the eye, as it is tempting to assume every complex image is the result of digital technologies. It is a worthwhile endeavor to puzzle out how Whitaker actually achieves these compositions
