It is hard to have it both ways: to do tight, fascinating figuration combined with atmospheric color in the same paintings. It is even harder to do both of these genres well and to integrate them into a personal style that looks like cities, creatures and random man-made structures floating and earthbound inside the most lush neon-incandescent fields. Gegam Kacherian accomplishes this fusion perfectly in work that radios this intense desire to observe every small detail around him, from futurist looking fauna to bizarre cityscapes. These peer out from behind dreamy blobs and liquidy swirls of hue, as if we are watching ourselves and our odd human condition but through a veil of mist or water.
