Continuing through April 12, 2014
The ghosts of the past appear cared for and renewed in Matjames Metson’s recent body of work. The vintage photographs from a bygone era, absent their original context become carefully framed relics in his refined hands. The assemblage pieces range dramatically in form and size and are reminiscent of medieval alters. The ritual of gallery viewing fits within the performance of paying homage to these unknown figures with the abundance of odd details and intricate patterns that only heighten this relationship between the viewer and art.
More than rebuilding a broken past, it’s personal since Metson has accomplished a similar feat by crawling out of the devastation of Katrina to build a new life in Los Angeles. The incredible amount of expression within each complex piece is a testament to sacrifice and relationship.
