Continuing through July 5, 2014
One expects Maura Bendett's works to expand across walls and to cast colorful shadows of cascading shapes. In her new work, Bendett has become more 'grounded' making floor sculptures that sit on corresponding pedestals (equipped with wheels for easy mobility). The colorful sculptures have a playfulness and patterning that recall the paintings of Jean Dubuffet. What is most intriguing about the sculptures is how they change when viewed from different vantage points. Their compelling forms have human qualities and suggest a human scale, yet are not personified. The works have a funkiness and imprecision that accentuates their hand-made qualities; they are made from painted museum board pieces that have been glued together to make intricate shapes that undulate and weave in and out of each other. Bendett's sculptures hold the space as well as the eye and promise to lead to even more inventions.
