“A sky in the palm of a hand,” is a beautiful and dazzling message of impermanence, change, and wonder. Lloyd Hamrol and Joan Perlman compliment each other with intimate abstract works. Hamrol shows large, site-specific felt sculptures that represent natural forms. Perlman’s abstract paintings and video create an awe-inspiring visual landscape. Using deep brown industrial felt Hamrol creates dream-like installations. “Cascade” spills like a waterfall from a corner of the gallery; “Overflow” looks like liquid flowing over stones.
Perlman bases her work on footage taken in Iceland, creating bold images that depict life beneath freezing glacial melts. The artist has studied the region for over twenty years, and has grown deeply involved in depicting its beauty. Her “Untitled” gouache on yupo is a rich, foamy, meditation on land and water that is filled with motion. “Untitled (highlands),” is a tribute to rain soaked green forests. Both artists offer poetic, dimensional works inspired by earth and water, works that lead viewers to explore and examine natural landscapes and the resiliency of nature itself.
