Joe Zucker, "1000 Brushstrokes," 2017, wood, mop heads, acrylic paint, screws, dimensions variable

Continuing through April 1, 2017

To create "1000 Brushtrokes," Joe Zucker dipped 1000 industrial mops into buckets of different hues of Benjamin Moore paint. Using primary, secondary and mixtures of those, as well as black, white and gray, Zucker presents an system of colors that progress from single, to double, then triple and quadruple dips. The single and multi-colored mops are then configured into modules of four that are bolted together where the brush meets the handles — delineating the shape of a square.

The 4-mop units are then installed as a large grid on the gallery walls. The cotton heads stiffened by the paint take on different shapes and characteristics, becoming in many ways anthropomorphized. As no two mops are alike their idiosyncrasies give the objects character and the installation a touch of humor. The installation is simultaneously simple and complex, its meaning formal and systematic.
