"Days and Nights and Lemons" is Holly Coulis' fascinating reinterpretation of the genre of still life. Coulis' paintings depict flattened objects and food arranged in geometrical configurations. The works are at once both abstract and representational, and while delicately painted in both bright colors and more subtle earth tones, they exude a confidence and determination.
What stands out in these paintings is the quality of line and the way each shape, be it a lemon, an apple, fish, or the plates and vessels on a table top is outlined two or three times in various colors, isolating each object but also providing instances of compelling intersections. The works are about the play between objects and what can happen when line meets edge.
