Post internet artists use the online environment as a source, inspiration and make work about information, communication and the screen. Joel Holmberg has embraced the concept in previous bodies of work, including pieces created for "Made in L.A. 2016.” In a bracing departure, Holmberg here presents representational paintings of toilet seats covered with little squares of toilet paper.
He first took snapshots of the decorated toilet seat in his shared studio bathroom, photographing the arrangements at different times of day, noting the changes in the shifting light. While the perspective remains the same (all the toilet seats are shot from above) the details change: the arrangement of paper pieces, the floor tiles, the ambient light. The paintings transform a laughably banal object into images that are precious, evocative and seductive.
