William Leavitt’s immersive "Cycladic Figures" presents an eclectic mix of installations, paintings, and works on paper. Regardless of the medium, his work here creates a rich narrative that we are invited to contemplate and expand upon. The title of the exhibition refers to sculptures created in the Cyclades Islands located off the coast of Greece five thousand years ago. A sense of mystery pervades Leavitt’s work, such as with the heightened noir of “Lennie’s Set,” and the sci-fi of “Faraday Cage.” The large scale sculptural pieces have also served as sets in films Leavitt has produced. In a similar fashion to his installations, Leavitt’s paintings and works on paper shape fascinating, layered scenes that compel us to unravel their meaning. Leavitt’s conceptual work in his “Head Space” series reveals two silhouetted faces against a background that morphs fields and cities as distant landscapes, while the faces themselves contain floating objects and architectural ruins.
