Nemesio Antúnez (1918-1993) was one of Chile's most renowned artists. He worked as a painter and printmaker and was also a great champion of other Chilean artists. He founded the graphic workshop Taller 99 and in the 1960s served as the Chilean Cultural Attache to the United States. Entitled "Chilean Master," this exhibition presents 26 prints and paintings created between the 1940s and 1980s, many of which are examples of Antúnez architectural cityscapes inspired by his time in New York City.
In works such as "N.Y.C., Park Avenue" or “Parade” (both 1966) Antúnez presents the urban environment as fractured. These compositions contain transparent geometric planes representing floors or sections of buildings in which groups of anonymous figures congregate in a modern and futuristic environment. Antúnez was not wedded to any particular style or subject; throughout his long career he experimented with geometric abstraction, representation, as well as surrealism, all influential movements in Latin America.
