Emily Counts shows mixed media sculptures, titled “The Association,” in which geometric, concise ceramic squares, circles, triangles and rectangles are morphed with representations of objects such as small bottles, hair and knives. A tall stack of ceramic, wood and glass dominates the gallery space, with a carved ceramic base illuminated with stained glass panels and lighting.
“Transformer” combines stoneware, walnut wood, acrylic sheet, stained glass and hardware in an intricately connected dimensional wall sculpture.An open sided box topped with ruby glass houses a diamond-like ceramic element, creating a mysterious, suspended treasure. Like many of the works here, it makes use of translucent stained glass and acrylic to grab the eye with a splash of color in an otherwise cool palette. Their sensation is both familiar and foreign, a feeling of connection and reverence permeates each piece. Counts also evokes architecture from some exotic world, at one turn futuristic, at another ancient and ritualistic.
