Carolin Larsen and Dominic Tertizzi
Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica, California
by Jody Zellen

Carolin Larsen, “L’horizon Palm Springs,” 2017, oil on canvas, 27 x 31”

Continuing through January 13, 2018

The paintings of Carolin Larsen and Dominic Tertizzi are thickly impastoed and built up in layers. Larsen creates colorful poolside landscapes, gardens and mountains. Her brush strokes are layered so they make patterns of colored textures that in many ways resemble textiles. Larsen abstracts reality, filling her canvases with dense layers of pure paint.

While Larsen's work is quite colorful, Tertizzi's paintings are white. Tertizzi builds up his surfaces by casting found and homemade objects into paint. These abstract works are compelling and intricate, with their ghost-like presence evoking ambiguous narratives and memories that can't quite be placed.
