Vija Celmins has been making detailed images of the sea and sky presented as cropped fragments since the 1960s. On view here are more than twenty works created between 2014 and 2017, including the majestic “Reverse Night Sky” (2015-17) in which dark stars are painted on a light ground, and the tromp l'oeil “Two Stones” (one is a found object, the other is made from alkyd on bronze). It is a pure pleasure to delve into her depictions of the ocean, as in two “Untitled (Ocean)” works, one a mezzotint, the other a drypoint (both 2016). Here, she also explores the dichotomies of light and dark and their myriad associations
