Gao Ludi, “TT-8,” 2015, mixed media on canvas, 11 3/4 x 7 7/8”

Continuing through March 31, 2018

Gao Ludi is a Beijing based painter being seen here in his first solo U.S. exhibition. “Album” is a series of paintings derived from digital sources. Ludi transforms banal imagery culled from disparate websites into colorful paintings that resonate collectively as a snapshot of our times. The paintings range from an image of the front of a microwave oven to the back of a polaroid photograph. Included are still lifes, portraits and landscapes, as well as images of other artist's work. Each image is painted so as to keep the details of the original image intact while simultaneously abstracting and colorizing the individual elements. The result is recognizable imagery that is impossible to trace back to its source.
