Continuing through June 30, 2011
Julia Freeman takes over this gallery with handmade wallpaper; yellow wallpaper to be exact, like in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic tale of madness. The paper here is canvas in a pale, mustardy yellow, with large white floral motifs, and googly eyes looking out from dark ovals. Oversize red ants crawl across the pattern, which itself is dripping with paint. In one segment of the installation, what looks like a window frame is scrawled with loops of red, while in another, blue paint is applied in curves and drips to resemble storm clouds.
The whole scene is sculptural, with an ominously empty wallpaper raincoat suspended in the gallery entrance, adjacent to a table of black-tape covered weapons, including an ax and a baseball bat. Despite the apparent sweetness of the floral wallpaper, this scene is an unsettling one.
