This is a painting constructed of 14 panels measuring 10 x 10 inches each. It was part of a body of work that arose from a sort of pilgrimage the artist made with his very elderly mother to the sites where her family lived through the great depression. The numerals in the painting are in fact all dates spanning 1930 through 1943. The vertical joints between the panels divide the painting into segments, one for each year. The further division into a checkerboard grid is created with an overlay of bee's wax purchased in the general store in the painting's name-sake town of Winfred.
