David Taylor - Border Monument No. 258, N32˚ 32,072' W 117˚ 07.369'
In the late 1800s the US government placed 285 monuments along the US/Mexican border, one within sight of another all the way across. As this was done, an 8 x 10 glass plate negative was made of each monument. Upon completion, three books of contact prints were made and distributed to different branches of government as documents of the border survey. When the artist learned about this history, he saw the time was right for a re-survey, and he spent 6 years locating and photographing every monument in it's present day setting. The eventual culmination of this project will be a new book containing images of all 285 monuments.
