The BBAX mission is dedicated to cultivating cultural understanding through the arts. We work to engage local communities and contemporary artists across the globe by facilitating workshops, educational programs, traveling exhibitions, international art exchanges and artist residencies.
Building Bridges Art Exchange (BBAX) is a non-profit contemporary art organization established in 2005 by Argentinian artist and curator Marisa Caichiolo.
BBAX began as an experimental space in Downtown Los Angeles showing carefully curated multicultural and international contemporary art. The first border-bridging project was in Mexico, under a formal agreement with the Mexican government and in connection with 14 countries.
Our current space in Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station Arts Center offers rotating exhibitions from around the world, artist residencies, educational workshops and lectures hosted by a diverse team of artists. We are guided by board members from eight countries and hold an even more expansive international artist program. Our reputation has facilitated partnerships with museums, galleries, Ministries of Culture, cultural art centers, art organizations and foundations from across the globe.
Coupled with many traveling exhibitions we host artists-in-residence, lectures, and workshops with the artists. In the countries where we send exhibitions, we encourage landscape interventions and performances that engage with the local communities. With these exchanges we create a dialogue, understanding and exploration between cultures.
The main content of our exhibitions have a social an political focus. We engage with international communities with the help of our partners which include ministries of culture, cultural centers, museums and other local non-profits. Recently we have created an educational program with LA high school students to engage with our selected artists-in-residence through lectures and workshops both in the school and in our Santa Monica space. As part of the program we encourage young artists recently graduated from universities to participate in biennials, and residencies in partnership with our organization.
