On June 18th the City Council of Oxnard approved its FY2019-20 budget which, due to a $9.2 million revenue shortfall, made many painful cuts — still including the closure of the Carnegie Art Museum as of July 1st. Despite an alternative operating plan put forward by the CAM Cornerstones Board of Directors, and a public outpouring of support and affection for the Museum expressed to the City Council, it is shutting down after nearly 40 years of service.
Meanwhile the CAM Cornerstones are transitioning during the summer to offer more eye-popping exhibits and programs by area and SoCal artists at its CAM Studio Gallery, facing Plaza Park right behind the Museum. CAM Cornerstones will be working hard to keep presenting visitors and students “aha- moment” art experiences and to be of assistance when the Museum reopens in the future. The Membership program will remain on-going with exhibit receptions, artist talks, and special off-site tours and stupendous events.
Announcements of these activities will be primarily through the website, e-newsletters and social media. So please keep watching for the exciting arts programming at the Studio that will keep the unique spirit of the Carnegie alive and growing.
